Site Instructions

Searching and Viewing Images

Images can be searched by using the search bar in top right hand corner of the site. You can also browse images by going to the Browse Images page with an option to filter your results by Culture, Object Type, and/or Holding Institution.  Most records for individual belongings contain multiple images displayed in an image carousel which can be expanded to full-screen.  You can zoom in to view details in images as needed.  The images are high resolution to allow for close examination and large format printing.  Some institutions have not yet granted MOA permission for images of belongings they hold to appear on this site.  In these cases and for some culturally sensitive belongings such as burial boxes, records for the artworks appear on the site, but without images.  Contact the MOA Archives to access these images.

Downloading and Using Images

Image files can be downloaded using the download button in upper right corner of the image carousel.  Except where noted otherwise, these images are licensed under a Creative Commons Licence. Requests for permissions beyond the scope of this license should be directed to the MOA Archives.  Additional permission may be needed from originating communities depending on the use.

Note on Object Types

In order to easily pull up similar artworks on the Browse Images page, make more logical groupings, and reduce object types that only have one or very few items, some items are assigned an object type that differs from that of the holding institution.  The term used by the holding instution, however, is retained in the item title so that those terms can still be searched across the site.  The list below illustrates the criteria used for some of the most common object types used in this site:

Bentwood bowl: Bentwood containers with curved upper edges and no wooden lid.  Includes items identified as a Bentwood dish
Bentwood box: Bentwood containers that are taller than they are wide
Bentwood chest: Bentwood containers that are wider than they are tall
Box cover: Covers and lids separate from their containers.  Includes complete and partial box covers
Drum: Includes box drums and hand drums, though the majority of drums on this site are box drums
